Fort Mac before the wildfire from Wikipedia

The Fort McMurray Wildfire is now officially the costliest disaster in Canadian history with the Financial Post estimating a total of roughly 3.58 billion dollars. This is more than the Quebec ice storm and double the cost of the 2014 Alberta floods. 2400 homes and structures have been lost due to the fire and over 27,000 insurance claims have been made at this time. Higgerty Law is here to support the people of Fort McMurray and offer important legal advice for those who have suffered property losses from the wildfire.

Why is it important to seek legal advice regarding insurance claims?

It is a great idea to seek legal advice when making a large insurance claim. By the nature of business, the financial interests of an insurance company and the financial interests of the claimants are not the same.Claimants wish to receive the payout they deserve, while insurance companies are looking to minimize their costs When homeowners suffer a loss and need to make an insurance claim, they are often negotiating with their insurance company without necessarily knowing their insurance rights or coverage. The issue is that for most homeowners, a catastrophic loss is a once in a lifetime event. The same cannot be said for insurance companies and their representatives who are well versed in insurance claims. The result can be that property owners settle for less than they are entitled under their coverage. We want all homeowners that were affected by the Fort Mac disaster to know that engaging a lawyer can be an effective way to better their insurance payouts. The right lawyer should be able to navigate through the applicable policy wordings and insurance laws, help ensure the necessary investigations are done, professionally negotiate towards resolution and take the matter to court if need be.
